Zachary Nicholas Mertens Obituary, SILVER FALLS STATE PARK, Ore. — Zachary Nicholas Mertens, 20, of Burlington, Kentucky, lost her life Monday evening, August 10, after falling approximately 177 feet from the top of South Falls at Silver Falls State Park in Oregon, authorities said.
Emergency responders were called to the state park at approximately 6:36 p.m. after receiving a account that a person had fallen from the waterfall. Per to the Oregon State Police and Marion County Sheriff’s Office, investigators determined that Mertens had entered a closed area near the top of South Falls while attempting to pose for photographs.
Authorities remarked Mertens slipped while inside the restricted area and fell into the water approximately 177 feet below. Another visitor reportedly attempted to perform CPR following the fall, but Mertens lost her life at the scene despite those efforts.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team coordinated the recovery operation with assistance from Oregon State Police troopers, sheriff’s deputies and Silver Falls State Park rangers. The circumstances surrounding the fall remain under probe, although authorities said Mertens had entered the closed area before the accident.
Mertens was a 2025 graduate of Bellevue High School, and news of his loss has affected his hometown local area in Kentucky. Bellevue Independent Schools released a statement expressing condolences to Mertens’ relatives, classmates and friends and offering support to those who knew and loved him.
South Falls is one of the most recognizable attractions at Silver Falls State Park, located east of Salem. The 177-foot waterfall is part of the park’s popular Trail of Ten Falls, which features multiple waterfalls and scenic viewpoints. Authorities routinely remind visitors to remain on designated trails and stay away from closed or restricted areas, particularly near waterfalls, cliffs and other hazardous terrain.
Mertens’ death is a loss for his family, friends, classmates and others who knew him. As law enforcement proceed to review the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall, his memory will remain with the community he called home.
