Terrence Cubit Obituary, VICTORIA, Texas — Terrence Cubit, 26, was killed in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday evening on Sam Houston Drive in Victoria, according to police. The collision also left two people seriously injured and led to an arrest in connection with the crash.
Victoria police and fire crews responded to the scene at approximately 7 p.m. near the intersection of Sam Houston Drive and Lilac Lane. The crash caused notable traffic disruptions as emergency personnel worked at the scene and investigators commenced examining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
According to police, a truck driven by 22-year-old Cantu was traveling in the 3800 block of Sam Houston Drive when it collided with an SUV driven by Cubit. The SUV was also occupied by 44-year-old Laquanda Callis and a 12-year-old girl.
Following the initial collision, Cubit’s SUV struck a utility pole near Lilac Lane. Cubit suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead, police said. Callis and the 12-year-old girl were seriously injured and transported to an out-of-town hospital for treatment. Agencies had not immediately released further information about their conditions.
After striking the SUV, Cantu’s truck reportedly veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another pickup truck driven by 72-year-old Gary Bennett. Authorities did not release information about whether Bennett was injured in the second collision. Cantu’s truck eventually stopped in a private driveway, where police took him into custody.
Cantu was booked into the Victoria County Jail on Wednesday and remained in custody pending arraignment, according to jail records. No bond had been set as of Wednesday. He faces intoxication-related charges following the deadly crash.
The crash inquiry remains ongoing as the Victoria Police Department works to establish the full sequence of events leading to the collision. Police have indicated that additional information about the circumstances of the crash and the charges may be released as the probe continues.
The roadway was closed for several hours while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene, but Victoria police reported that Sam Houston Drive was fully reopened at approximately 10:13 p.m. Tuesday.
